Introduction
Hi, I'm Eric Siegel and I am a sophomore math and econ major, and a member of the Media, Self & Society Scholars Program at the University of Maryland. If you need to reach me, shoot me an email at [email protected]! The biggest reason I decided to do the Media, Self & Society Scholars Program here at UMD was that I value interdisciplinary knowledge. I think that college is a great opportunity for students to develop understandings of many different fields of study. While my major courses focus on mathematical and economic topics, I knew I wanted to explore a different kind of field through the College Park Scholars program. Media in particular stuck out to me because of the increasing presence it has in all of our lives. As we all have around-the-clock access to the Internet at all times, we are constantly bombarded with news stories, commentary on the news, and plenty of headlines. We need to make decisions about how much we trust these sources, and how we want to receive our information. By studying media, I feel like I get a clearer understanding of how to evaluate the information I see online, and decide what I should take from it. In addition, by being in the Media, Self & Society Program, I am exposed to many different types of people from different geographic and personal backgrounds. It is a great experience to be in a living-learning community with a diverse set of students, because we all get to hear different, unique perspectives on important issues. Media has helped me broaden my horizons throughout my college experience. - 12/7/20
